Vietnam dominated the third day of the fencing competition at the 26th SEA Games while Indonesia has yet to win gold as of Tuesday at the University of Indonesia in Depok, West Java. Vietnam’s fencers dominated the women’s foil event, with Nguyen Thi Tuaoi beating Lee Thi Bich 15-10 in an all-Vietnam final. In the men’s sabre event, Walbert Mendoza from the Philippines beat Vietnam’s Vu Thanh An 15-14 to take gold.
Overall, Vietnam has won three gold, two silver and two bronze medals to win the overall fencing competiton. Thailand is in second place with one gold, one silver and five bronze medals. Indonesia languishes in a lowly fifth place with three silver and one bronze, below the Philippines and Malaysia.
None of Indonesia’s fencers made it to the final in the third day of competition on Tuesday, their worst day in the event as they did not win a single medal. “Our players lack experience. Technically and mentally, we have to admit there’s a lot to be managed,” Indonesia fencing manager Eman Sumusi said.
Indonesian athletes lost in the quarterfinals of the men’s and women’s sabre and foil events. Ruli Mauliadhani lost 8-15 to Thailand’s Wiradech Kothny while Verdiana Rihandini was stopped by Vietnam’s Le Thi Bich 3-4. Indonesia Fencing Association chairman Tono Suratman said Indonesia had targeted to win two gold medals. “We can still do this in the men’s epée and the women’s sabre,” Tono said. UR-10
