Vietnam’s Phan Thi Ha Thanh, 20, won the women’s artistic gymnastics individual all-round competition at the 26th SEA Games with an outstanding performance yesterday. At the Jakabaring sports complex in Palembang, Indonesia, she was spectacular but precise on the balance beam, pommel horse, uneven bars, and vault. “I was confident before and during my performance, so I won it though my rivals performed well too,” she said.
“The title is a motivation for me to head for the Olympics.” Thanh has an outstanding career record. Last month she won a bronze medal in the women’s vault event at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Tokyo.
At the 2005 and 2007 SEA Games she won gold medals in the individual and team pommel horse. Vietnam won eight other gold medals yesterday in vovinam, wrestling, fencing, and athletics. They are in third place in the medals tally with 27 golds, 29 silvers, and 36 bronzes behind hosts Indonesia and Thailand.
